Great Locations for Toronto Photos

engagement photo toronto island

One of the aspects I love about being a photographer in the Greater Toronto Area is a seemingly endless supply of great places to shoot.

From urban settings to waterfronts to leafy parks and historic sites, the GTA is full of amazing places to make impactful images. When considering backdrops for photographing clients, I have a number of locations in my repertoire. In this article we’ll talk about some of those locations, why I like them and why I love doing engagement shoots, portraiture and more here.

Urban Vibes

Toronto is one of the great cities of the world, and I love its urban vibes and cosmopolitan feel. That’s true whether I’m just strolling the streets of Toronto on my own, or for when I’m with clients and putting them up against this unique backdrop to create images with a very urban mood.

Toronto is, of course, a multi-culture, and is ideal for urban photography & portraiture in its many diverse neighbourhoods. From Chinatown & Kensington Market to the Distillery District and so many other spots – both iconic (Eaton Centre bridge, Nathan Phillips Square) and more obscure – I love working with people to produce memorable images that evoke a distinctly urban mood and style.

Just walking the streets, amongst Toronto’s unique architecture and the character of its residents, gives me inspiration for great photography here. Some of my favourite photos were taken while walking the streets of Toronto, especially in the hour or so before sunset when the light is magical and both subjects and backgrounds really come to life.

What are some of the spots I like in particular?

Knox College, U of T

The University of Toronto campus is great, and I especially like Knox College. You need a permit to shoot here, but it’s worth it. Great architecture is found here, especially in and around the chapel and surrounding buildings, courtyards and gardens. Elegant in its traditional style, quite dramatic in fact. It’s in the heart of the city, evokes a great urban feel. It’s also convenient for people to get to, easily reachable by public transit and central to folks living across Toronto and the GTA.

High Park

You can’t beat Toronto’s lovely High Park for urban nature, especially in May for those couple of weeks when the cherry blossoms are out. High Park is great virtually year-round, though, and I’m always happy exploring its many settings, doing portraits and engagement shoots.

Toronto Music Garden

This isn’t one of those tourist guide or Instagram-saturated places, but another oasis of urban nature (smaller than High Park to be sure) is this spot on the waterfront just west of the CN Tower. That’s what lets us make some iconic, unforgettable Toronto images. Manicured grounds give a green backdrop with the famous Toronto skyline right behind it. Another one that’s fairly central and well within reach.

Distillery District

I still think this is a great area for a stroll, giving a candid, romantic city vibe. The Distillery District is worthy of the amount of attention it gets. Having said that, they are doing more to control capacity and are charging more for permits now. With good reason, admittedly, since it’s really a great urban setting. You’ll see Instagrammers galore here. But that doesn’t mean that we should avoid it, I’ll just make sure to plan it out well to get the most of our time and effort here.

Eva + Demian’s Engagement Shoot at Toronto’s High Park

Eva and Demian’s Engagement Shoot at Toronto’s High Park

Located in the heart of The Six, Eva and Demian’s engagement shoot at Toronto’s High Park was casual but romantic.

A popular location for all different kinds of photography, High Park is officially Toronto’s largest park. The beautiful landscape has something for everyone – even the non-outdoorsy type! There are hiking trails, fields and streams, as well as picnic spots and off-leash dog runs. Not only that, but within the limits of the park there is also a large waterfront along Grenadier Pond, a restaurant/cafe, an adventure park, and even a zoo!

The couple walked the trails hand in hand, stopping to cuddle on the grassy shore by the water. They playfully whispered and giggled when they took a break to sit on a bench by a fountain.

The summer sunset broke through the tree leaves and made for a significantly romantic background. High Park’s natural and green surroundings were perfect for the two celebrating their recent engagement.

Valens Lake Conservation Area Engagement Photos: Jen + Andrew’s Adventure

Located in Hamilton, Ontario, these Valens Lake Conservation Area engagement photos featured the couple hiking, camping and boating. Jen and Andrew’s outdoor adventure is inspiration for any newly engaged couple looking to have an engagement session.

The large park not only has beautiful wooded areas, streams, and trails, but also offers a variety of activities for campers and non-campers alike. Always the outdoorsy type, the couple was comfortable, laid back and absolutely in their element. They laughed and played among the trees. Andrew joked, and Jen was beaming.

Following a walk down the park’s long wooden bridge, the pair suited up in life vests and took their boat out on the water at sunset. The laughter continued as they rowed, with Jen’s giggles echoing across the lake.

Next, it was time to set up camp for the night. Always a gentleman, Andrew did the heavy lifting and hiked carrying the big pack while Jen was in charge of the smaller equipment.

The tent was up in record time (either that, or tent time flies when you’re having fun!). The champagne was popped; blankets laid out. The couple cuddled in the glow of the tent light.

This engagement session was especially romantic. Not only did the pictures showcase Jen and Andrew’s deep love for one another, but also revealed their outgoing and bubbly personalities. Even without knowing them, you absolutely get a sense of how much fun these two have together.

Indoor Winter Engagement Photos in Oakville | Alyssa + Paul

Indoor Winter Engagement Photos in Oakville | Alyssa + Paul

Alyssa + Paul’s Indoor Winter Engagement Photos in Oakville

New homeowners Alyssa + Paul were giddy and playful during their indoor winter engagement photos in Oakville, Ontario. Two exciting new adventures for the couple were being captured: the purchase of their first home together plus their recent engagement. With so much to celebrate, their happiness, enthusiasm and joy radiated in every shot!

On the front steps of their home, you immediately get a sense of their playful nature. Each of them has a personalized NHL house key featuring their favourite rivalling hockey teams – none other than Canada’s original six rivalry, Montreal versus Toronto. Despite Alyssa being a die-hard fan of the Canadiens and Paul’s unwavering support of the Maple Leafs, they’re able to laugh about it. Their love transcends the good old hockey game!

Inside, the bright and open space of their new abode gave them lots of room to dance around. They had Nelly’s 2009 hit Dilemma  playing from their phone while laughing and sipping red wine among the twinkle of tea lights and tapered candles in their living room. At dusk, the two bundled up and stepped outside for a quick walk along the waterfront; cuddling to keep one another warm in the season’s crisp air. It was the perfect opportunity to take out the drone and get some aerial shots of the pair before warming back up in the kitchen with espresso in monogrammed his & her mugs.

Congratulations to Alyssa + Paul (times two)! May you enjoy your engagement, filled with laughter and exciting new memories in your new home.
